MEMORIES. “E.L. Window” and “Terry”, both oils, are from the early 60s, when I had recently returned from study in California. They have the semi-abstract rough quality of that period. My mother kept my childhood pencil drawings — I used them as source material for the painting “Quite Early”. The large “Cloisters” painting is an image of the interior of the Frick Fine Arts building at Pitt where I was teaching at that time. “Nude-Oakland” was painted from a model who I posed outside on a little 2nd floor porch at Frick Fine Arts. “McKeesport” is a view from the fire escape at my sister’s house. The “Head”, tongue stuck out is me — I must have been angry at the time.”
